Marion County lawmakers: Local students encouraged to apply for House internship

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 9, 2026) – Marion County legislators are encouraging local students to apply for the Indiana House Republican Internship Program for the 2027 legislative session.

State Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) said this paid, full-time internship is open to college students, recent graduates and students in law or graduate school from January through April.

"The ability to work in a professional setting like the Statehouse can serve as a great steppingstone for students preparing to enter the workforce," Behning said. "Young Hoosiers with an interest in the legislative process and learning more about the policy issues impacting our state should apply."

State Rep. Julie McGuire (R-Indianapolis) said interns work in the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis full-time Monday through Friday during the legislative session and gain practical knowledge of state government through active participation in the legislative process.

"This is an incredibly unique internship where students work alongside lawmakers and gain exposure to the legislative process," McGuire said. "As a former intern myself, I know the value this experience can offer to young Hoosiers looking to build skills, gain confidence and serve their state."

State Rep. Andrew Ireland (R-Indianapolis) said positions are available in legislative operations, policy and communications.

"Students of all majors and backgrounds can use this internship to learn more about the issues facing our state and how lawmakers and industry leaders are addressing them," Ireland said. "The Statehouse is a hub of activity during session, and the perfect environment to hone work skills and meet professionals."

State Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fishers) said this spring semester internship gives interested students opportunities to interact with state legislators, state agencies and private sector organizations, as well as participate in a weekly speaker series featuring Indiana civic leaders.

"An internship at the Statehouse gives students a head start that can pay dividends long after the legislative session ends," Jeter said. "The skills, relationships and experience they gain can help prepare them for whatever career path they choose."

Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
